Zuko and Mai's relationship didn't start until he joined his sister's side earning his return to the Fire Nation, but it was hinted that they had a crush on each other when they were little (confirmed by Azula). The first time they are seen kissing is during their set up "date" in the Earth Kingdom, and later on their way to the Fire Nation.

During a brief vacation to Ember Island they break up because of Zuko´s anger at himself but later make up, with Mai saying that he's the one she cares about the most. Before leaving to train the Avatar he leaves a goodbye letter to her, and later tells Sokka that he didn't want Mai to be seen as a traitor.

In the prison he says almost proudly that she doesn't need protection from a guard, and that he must help the Fire Nation. In order to help him and the rest escape, she betrays Azula and tells her that she loves Zuko more than she fears her (Azula). After the war is over and his coronation is about to start, she helps him get dressed and they renew their relationship through a passionate hug, and romantic kiss.

THUNK

Zuko dreaded the sound of THUNK.

THUNK was the herald of death, of destruction, of being forced to sleep on the divan in his own Royal Fire Bedroom. THUNK foretold a stretch of silence and subsonic growling that could last until the end of time, or at least until his Royal Fire Dinner was served. THUNK was a warning that his own bloody, painful end was yet delayed solely because someone had decided that stabbing a blade into a chunk of wood was more fun that stabbing it into his Royal Fire Body, but at any moment the chunk of wood might lose its amusing nature and then Zuko's body would be the only other option.

The Birth of the Fire Princess chapter 2Katara washes the new born baby with the warm water from the bucket. When she is finished bathing she gently dries the baby with a towel and than wraps the baby inside it. She gives hands the little bundle of joy to the waiting arms of the Fire Lord.
“Congratulations Zuko. It seems Mai has blessed you with a beautiful daughter” She says happily. Her work is done.
There are now words that can describe what’s going to Mai’s and Zuko’s minds when they see their daughter for the first time! The most noticeable feature is the gold colored eyes the newborn has. The infant’s eyes are open wide.

I’d introduce myself, but then I’d have to kill you. What I will do is leave you free to wonder if that was a joke.

My story begins in this little nowhere city in what used to be the Fire Nation Colonies. Only the colonies aren't the colonies anymore, and in fact this whole story is about making them something a little bit more than 'not the colonies anymore.' You see, the leaders of the world needed a place to sign these things called "the Republic Accords" that would make the Not The Colonies Anymore into a new nation called the United Republic.
